Cognii is a provider of artificial intelligence-based educational technologies, working with organizations in the K-12, higher education, and corporate training markets to help deliver superior learning outcomes and cost efficiency. Its products include the Cognii Learning Platform, Virtual Learning Assistant, and Assessment Engine.
The company offers a suite of products powered by artificial intelligence for better assessment and real-time tutoring. For instance, the Cognii Virtual Learning Assistant engages students in personalized tutoring conversations, providing immediate scoring and feedback on written answers to open-response questions. Also, the Cognii Assessment Engine uses artificial intelligence to provide immediate, highly accurate assessment of the ideas in short written answers. The Assessment Engine uses unique Natural Language Processing (NLP) technology to assess deep understanding and critical thinking. Cognii also offers an Analytics product, which displays real-time insights for educators within the Cognii Learning Platform with unique high-resolution data useful for personalization and intervention.
Working with Cognii would help address the Quality Education SDG. Some of the most proven practices for improving engagement, learning, and retention are more frequent assessments, one-to-one tutoring, writing-to-learn, and open response assessments. These practices are not only costly, but are also generally dependent upon access to a well-trained human. Cognii offers a solution, giving customized feedback, engaging students in active learning, and helping improve knowledge retention. Moreover, this project would advance the Decent Work and Economic Growth SDG because Cognii products are also utilized in corporate training markets, and could be used to help increase labor productivity, which in turn facilitates strong business outcomes.
The original content of this case is from Oxford Initiative on AI×SDGs (2018-2022) which was a research project at the University of Oxford, directed by Prof. Luciano Floridi and Prof. Mariarosaria Taddeo. Its goal was to determine how artificial intelligence (AI) has been and can be used to support and advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). One of the deliverables was a curated, open, and fully searchable collection of international projects that use AI to support one or more of the SDGs. The content of that collection is now hosted here. We thank Prof. Floridi, Prof. Taddeo and their research team for the collaboration. Descriptions and functionalities have been extended to adapt the original content to the AI for SDGs Think Tank Observatory.
