The DiDi Smart Transportation Brain is an AI-powered solution that facilitates real-time data to provide cities with a range of transportation and infrastructure improvements, including traffic flow measurements, “Smart Traffic Signals,” reversible lanes, and traffic management programs for maintenance scheduling and system assessments.

Didi Chuxing, the world’s largest mobile transportation platform together with the Chinese traffic management authorities, launched an integrated solution for smart city traffic management called the “DiDi Smart Transportation Brain” in January 2018. Using data from its 7 billion + rides in 2017, it can apply AI analysis to help traffic lights automatically adjust their signal timing based on the real-time movement of cars on its platform.

In January 2017, Didi Chuxing officially launched AI Labs to expand its research on AI-driven innovation and attract top talents to push the frontiers of global smart traffic technology. The launch reflects DiDi’s commitment to investing in AI transportation technology. With a team of over 200 AI scientists and engineers, AI Labs will be led by Prof. Ye Jieping, Vice President of Didi Chuxing. DiDi plans to further expand AI Labs this year.

DiDi AI Labs is addressing the main challenges being faced by artificial intelligence in the transportation sector. Projects will focus on topics ranging from natural language processing, computer vision for operations research, deep learning, statistics and other prospective technologies, which will contribute to meet the Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure goal and Sustainable Cities and Communities goal. DiDi will leverage technology developed at AI Labs to improve user experience and transportation efficiency and to further enhance its intelligent transportation ecosystem

The original content of this case is from Oxford Initiative on AI×SDGs (2018-2022) which was a research project at the University of Oxford, directed by Prof. Luciano Floridi and Prof. Mariarosaria Taddeo. Its goal was to determine how artificial intelligence (AI) has been and can be used to support and advance the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). One of the deliverables was a curated, open, and fully searchable collection of international projects that use AI to support one or more of the SDGs. The content of that collection is now hosted here. We thank Prof. Floridi, Prof. Taddeo and their research team for the collaboration. Descriptions and functionalities have been extended to adapt the original content to the AI for SDGs Think Tank Observatory.
