Colombia establishes the world's largest tropical crop gene bank (Future Seeds)

Brief Project Information

In March 2022, Future Seeds, the world's largest tropical crop gene bank, was established in Colombia to protect plant biodiversity and support agricultural research. Managed by the International Union for Biological Diversity (CIGAR) and the International Tropical Agriculture Centre (CIAT), it includes more than 37000 legume samples, 6000 cassava samples and 22600 tropical forage samples from more than 100 countries. These gene banks, which store seeds, seedlings and tissues containing genetic information, are crucial to achieving food and nutrition security worldwide.

Other breakthrough technologies in Future Seeds, including unmanned aerial vehicles and big data, will also help to analyze the characteristics of field crops more quickly, use artificial intelligence to identify potential biodiversity hotspots in nature, and accelerate the development of climate-adapted crops.
